Toronto, ON, May 28, 2019 – The Criminal Lawyers Association (CLA) has awarded the prestigious G. Arthur Martin Criminal Justice Medal to Justice David. H. Doherty.
The Martin Medal was struck in 1989 to honour Goldwyn Arthur Martin, a nationally prominent criminal lawyer and eminent jurist. It is awarded in recognition of lifelong achievement and sustained commitment to the principles and advancement of criminal justice in Canada.
Noted as the longest-serving justice for the Court of Appeal for Ontario, Justice Doherty is being recognized for his lifelong career and contribution to the administration of justice as well as legal educator. The Martin Medal will be presented to Justice Doherty at a gala luncheon to be held on November 16, 2019 during the CLA annual conference in Toronto where more than 300 attendees will hear directly from Justice Doherty.
“While Justice Doherty has distinguished himself as the pre-eminent criminal law jurist in Canada, I also understand as Crown counsel he exemplified the finest traditions of G. Arthur Martin. He was fair, worked hard and was unrivalled as both trial and appellate counsel,” said Louis P. Strezos, Defence Lawyer and a director for Criminal Lawyers’ Association.
ustice Doherty is “guided by what he intellectually considers to be the right result according to law but also by a deep concern and compassion for the people who become involved in the process,” said The Honourable Dennis R. O’Connor, OOnt, OC, QC, a close friend of Justice Doherty.
“Justice Doherty is an exceptional communicator, and a gifted teacher whose contributions to legal education at the Federation of Criminal Law Programs and in countless continuing education panels and lectures, have provided our profession with a deeper and principled understanding of criminal law and an unparalleled insight into criminal law problem solving. Simply put, he is a master educator,” said Brian H. Greenspan, CLA Past President and recipient of the 2010 G. Arthur Martin Criminal Justice Medal.
“He is one of the most respected criminal jurists in Canada with his decisions being widely cited and relied on in appellate courts across the country. He is known for simplifying complicated legal issues and bringing clarity to areas of legal confusion. All lawyers who have the privilege of appearing before him are better because of it” said current CLA President Michael Lacy who looks forward to bestowing the honour on this year’s recipient.
Justice Doherty was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario – High Court of Justice in September 1988 and appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in September 1990.
Previous winners of the medal include former Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justices Antonio Lamer and Beverley McLachlin, prominent justices from all levels of the judiciary and legendary defence counsel.
